WELSH CROWN GREEN BOWLING ASSOCIATION The 2019 season reached its culmination with the Welsh Champion of Champions tournament held at Abergele BC on Sunday 6th October. The day was hosted by WCGBA President, Dave Mathias, in his last role as President and run by Dusia Price , Glyndwr Area. Our Referees were DT Evans, Alan Davies, Arthur Peake and Peter Hayes. The field of sixteen players featured champions from a number of Welsh events throughout the year including the prestigious Merits and a variety of qualifying competitions. It may be getting to the close of the 2018 season, but the ‘dragon’, it seems is not ready to hibernate. At the Waterloo Champion of Champions event in Blackpool at the weekend, Wales had much to celebrate and be proud of. In the men’s competition on Saturday 29th September John Bailey and Mathew Worden were flying the flag for Wales and they passed the baton to Linda Williams and Sarah Nicholas for the Ladies competition on the Sunday. The British Ladies Merit was held in July at Helsby Community Sports Club. ‘All the greens were brown’ but the Welsh ladies were on fire. Our three qualifiers from Wales, Jane Bowler ( Conwy ), Sarah Nicholas ( Gresford Colliery ) and Linda Williams ( Hawksbury ) seemed to find the conditions to their liking in as much as the standard of their performances was to win each one of them a place in the quarter final. The annual Senior Championship for Wales at Brymbo Sports and Social Club. The event was hosted by 2018 Welsh President, Brenda Jones who was delighted to welcome everyone to this exceptional venue. A warm welcome was extended to the 2018 BCGBA President, Keith Andrews, who has many friends in Wales, and to Allan Jones and his wife Sue, from Bowls Wales – a co ordinating body for bowls across Wales. The phrase ‘It’s Coming Home’ has been bandied about in sporting circles all summer. As a country, we can truly say this as the British Junior Merit Trophy returned to Wales at the weekend with a brilliant victory for Matthew Worden ( Gresford Colliery ). Together with Sam Williams ( Cunliffe ), they represented Wales at the competition which was held this year at Netherseal Bowling Club in Derbyshire. The event was hosted by the Deputy British President 2018 Graham Jackson. The field of 32 players from across the crown green bowling world included a few unfamiliar faces and names.

It was definitely a case of ‘thunderbolt and lightning’ at the Welsh Junior Merit at Benllech on Sunday 27th May. Deputy President, Dave Mathias was our host with Referees DT Evans, Arthur Peake and Alan Davies. The 2018 Ladies County matches got underway on Sunday 20 May. Wales played Mid Cheshire with the Home venue at Min Y Don Bowling Club and the Away venue, Rudheath Sports and Social Club, Cheshire. The Ladies Individual Merit was played on Saturday 19th May – competing with the Royal Wedding and FA Cup Final among other things. This year it was held at Cunliffe Bowling Club. The event was hosted by President Brenda Jones who also welcomed each competitor and started off each match. Referees on the day were Jim Clarke, Tom Lockyer and Peter Hughes. Sunday 13th May should have marked the start of the Welsh Junior campaign for the 2018 British Junior County title. Due to the group arrangement this year, Wales are in a group of five. This meant our Juniors had an open date. However, the opportunity to get all potential players together for a friendly was too good to miss and this was held at the Oval Bowling Club, Llandudno.
