Christmas 2023

  The BowlsWales staff team will be taking a break over the Christmas period. Our ‘home offices’ will be closing on Friday 22nd December at 4.00pm and re-opening on Wednesday 3rd January 2024 from 9am. National Safeguarding Officer resigns

Keeley Spriggs, BowlsWales National Safeguarding Officer recently handed in resignation to focus on her university degree as she heads into her final year. We wish Keeley all the best for the future and thank her for her contribution. Now Keeley has left her post, please direct all communications you would normally send to her to Sophie Hancocks, Safeguarding@bowlswales.com. WCGBA Ladies Champion of Champions

We have a few things to be proud of this year, especially the ladies. Wales has the British Junior Ladies Champion for the second season in a row with Jess Lacey’s recent win at Heswall. We can also congratulate Linda Williams for getting to the final of the Ladies Champion of Champions on Sunday 1st October at Monk’s Sports and Social Club, Warrington. Linda, who has won this event twice ( 2010 and 2018) had a good run of games throughout the days’ play. She won 21-1 over Helen Clee in the first round then a 21-17 over Louise Ollerton

WCGBA Welsh Vets Club Championship

On Tuesday 26 September, the Mel Higham Welsh Vets Club Championship was played at Argoed BC. WCGBA Officials were, once again, there to support and run the event. Referees Arthur Peake and Alan Davies – having dried out from Sunday –  were joined by Peter Hughes. The four teams to qualify this year were Gresford Colliery – the 2022 winners, Coed Talon, Criccieth and Rhos Park. The pairing of Coed Talon with Rhos Park for one section of the competition saw a few more successes for Coed Talon especially Richie Jamieson 21-12 over Wynne Evans, John Bonatti’s 21-16 over Ronnie

WCGBA Champion of Champions

As the 2023 season comes to a close on the WCGBA Competitions, the two remaining competitions were held this week. On Sunday, 24th September, the Welsh Champion of Champions was staged at Benllech BC. In a day of appalling weather conditions, the situation was challenging for all, including the reporter. Despite this, some of the bowling was truly of Championship quality. There were 16 players, each winners of a major Welsh title to qualify. WCGBA Welsh Club Championship Finals

The Welsh Club Championship Finals took place on Sunday 17th September at Conwy Bowling Club. It was to be a good days’ bowling with a nail-biting finish. The four Clubs competing, who had each won their Area stage, were Llanrwst, Esclusham, Rhos Park and Broughton and Bretton. The WCGBA President Jack Hunt, Deputy President Pauline Lindley, Past President Simon Walker and Members of the WCGBA Management were there to officiate and support another highlight of the Welsh Crown Green calendar. BCGBA Ladies Junior Individual Merit

The BCGBA Ladies Junior Individual Merit was held, once again, at Heswall Bowling Club on Saturday September 2nd 2023. This is an excellent venue, with a tricky green and prominent crown. The makeup of the finals day is a ‘Round Robin’. There were four groups with four players and the scoring to 15 up. In Groups One and Four we had Junior Ladies from, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Warwick & Worcester and the Isle of Man. In Groups Two and Three, it was Wales, Cheshire, Isle of Man and Burton and District. WCGBA Mixed Pairs Competition

The 2023 Welsh Mixed Pairs Competition was held at Rhos On Sea Bowling Club on Sunday 27th August. The Referees on the day were Alan Davies, Arthur Peake and Richard Haywood. Nine pairs took part and all ages covered. In Round one, young Jack Dougal paired with veteran bowler Linda Williams had a comfortable win over Caroline Davies and Geraint Roberts 21-15. Paul and Marie Hallett also won 21-15 in their first game against Tony and Linda Kirkham. WCGBA Welsh Junior Mert 2023

The individual championship for Welsh Junior players was held on Sunday 23rd July at Coedpoeth BC. Hosted by Deputy President, Pauline Lindley, who welcomed everyone at the start, it is one of the high spots of the Crown Green calendar. Her guests included the President, Jack Hunt and members of the EGB and Officers of the WCGBA. Referees on duty all day included Arthur Peake, Peter Hughes and Peter Kempster.
