Crown Green Bowling – Welsh Champion of Champions
The final major event of the season, the Welsh Champion of Champions, was held on Sunday 7th October at Coed Talon Bowling Club. This event is in its fourth year and spectators had a tasty line up of players to watch. Forget ‘elite’ or ‘cream’, this is just about bowls at its best. It may be getting to the close of the 2018 season, but the ‘dragon’, it seems is not ready to hibernate. At the Waterloo Champion of Champions event in Blackpool at the weekend, Wales had much to celebrate and be proud of. The Wales Sport Awards sees BBC Cymru Wales and Sport Wales join forces annually to showcase the very best of elite and grassroots sport in Wales. The Awards combine the expertise of both organisations to create Wales’ biggest ever sporting celebration. The Awards include a range of categories. The public can nominate and vote for their favourite community and elite sporting heroes, and an expert panel of judges decide many of the overall winners. Welsh Bowlers success at Special Olympic Anniversary Games
The Anniversary Games in Stirling was celebrating Special Olympic GB’s 40th Anniversary and Special Olympic Worldwide’s 50th Anniversary. Indoor Bowls was a late inclusion in the Anniversary Games which meant that only a small percentage of Welsh Bowlers were available for selection. Cardiff Chameleons Bowls section, based at Sophia Gardens, is the biggest club in Wales for people with Intellectual Learning Difficulties. Our numbers have increased considerably, following the success of the Welsh Bowlers at the National Summer Games in 2017 where a squad of 14 Bowlers came home with 20 medals. The British Ladies Merit was held in July at Helsby Community Sports Club. ‘All the greens were brown’ but the Welsh ladies were on fire. Our three qualifiers from Wales, Jane Bowler ( Conwy ), Sarah Nicholas ( Gresford Colliery ) and Linda Williams ( Hawksbury ) seemed to find the conditions to their liking in as much as the standard of their performances was to win each one of them a place in the quarter final. The annual Senior Championship for Wales at Brymbo Sports and Social Club. The event was hosted by 2018 Welsh President, Brenda Jones who was delighted to welcome everyone to this exceptional venue. The phrase ‘It’s Coming Home’ has been bandied about in sporting circles all summer. As a country, we can truly say this as the British Junior Merit Trophy returned to Wales at the weekend with a brilliant victory for Matthew Worden ( Gresford Colliery ). Together with Sam Williams ( Cunliffe ), they represented Wales at the competition which was held this year at Netherseal Bowling Club in Derbyshire. Junior Merit – Crown Green Bowling
It was definitely a case of ‘thunderbolt and lightning’ at the Welsh Junior Merit at Benllech on Sunday 27th May. Deputy President, Dave Mathias was our host with Referees DT Evans, Arthur Peake and Alan Davies.
