Welsh Bowlers success at Special Olympic Anniversary Games

The Anniversary Games in Stirling was celebrating Special Olympic GB’s 40th Anniversary and Special Olympic Worldwide’s 50th Anniversary.  Indoor Bowls was a late inclusion in the Anniversary Games which meant that only a small percentage of Welsh Bowlers were available for selection.  Cardiff Chameleons Bowls section, based at Sophia Gardens, is the biggest club in Wales for people with Intellectual Learning Difficulties.  Our numbers have increased considerably, following the success of the Welsh Bowlers at the National Summer Games in 2017 where a squad of 14 Bowlers came home with 20 medals.  The club now numbers 25 bowlers with many

British Ladies Merit – Crown Green Bowling

The British Ladies Merit was held in July at Helsby Community Sports Club. ‘All the greens were brown’ but the Welsh ladies were on fire. Our three qualifiers from Wales, Jane Bowler ( Conwy ), Sarah Nicholas ( Gresford Colliery ) and Linda Williams ( Hawksbury ) seemed to find the conditions to their liking in as much as the standard of their performances was to win each one of them a place in the quarter final. Welsh Senior Merit 2018 – Crown Green Bowling

The annual Senior Championship for Wales at Brymbo Sports and Social Club. The event was hosted by 2018 Welsh President, Brenda Jones who was delighted to welcome everyone to this exceptional venue. A warm welcome was extended to the 2018 BCGBA President, Keith Andrews, who has many friends in Wales, and to Allan Jones and his wife Sue, from Bowls Wales – a co ordinating body for bowls across Wales. British Junior Merit – Crown Green Bowling

The phrase ‘It’s Coming Home’ has been bandied about in sporting circles all summer. As a country, we can truly say this as the British Junior Merit Trophy returned to Wales at the weekend with a brilliant victory for Matthew Worden ( Gresford Colliery ). Together with Sam Williams ( Cunliffe ), they represented Wales at the competition which was held this year at Netherseal Bowling Club in Derbyshire. The event was hosted by the Deputy British President 2018 Graham Jackson. The field of 32 players from across the crown green bowling world included a few unfamiliar faces and names.

Junior Merit – Crown Green Bowling

It was definitely a case of ‘thunderbolt and lightning’ at the Welsh Junior Merit at Benllech on Sunday 27th May. Deputy President, Dave Mathias was our host with Referees DT Evans, Arthur Peake and Alan Davies. This year we had a smaller number of entries than previous occasions with a field of 24 players from across North Wales. The weather was blustery with light rain as the games got underway in the preliminary round. 10 Nations Tournament Announcement

The eyes of the bowls world will be on Cardiff & Vale next month for a 10 nations test match. Wales have invited nine countries to take part in the nine-day event which is being held as part of the preparation for the Atlantic Championships which Wales will host in 2019. Countries taking part are Malaysia, Australia, USA, Spain, Ireland, Jersey, Canada, South Africa and Namibia (men only). Both the WBA and WWBA have chosen teams made up of a mix of experienced and a development players to give them an opportunity to play against some of the top countries

Julie Thomas & Gilbert Miles with Directors John Wilson and Bryon John today took on South Africa in the B2/B3 mixed pairs semi-final match and narrowly missed out on a spot in the final; it was a close fought game going all the way to the last bowl. Wales will now play Scotland to contest for the Bronze medal tomorrow 10am (BST) The morning saw Dan Salmon’s winning streak continue in his singles campaign with a 21-18 victory over Brendan Aquilina of Malta, before beating the Cook Islands 21-17 in round four. Daniels delivers Wales’ first medal on the greens. April 8th 2018 can be another memorable moment that Laura Daniels can add to her impressive bowling CV. Daniels’ outstanding form continued into the semi-final where she faced Canada’s Kelly McKerihen powering past her Canadian opposition winning 21 – 13. Setting her up for the Gold medal match that evening against current title holder Jo Edwards from New Zealand. There were mixed fortunes for the Welsh team today on the second day of the games at Broadbeach. The Men’s Triple continue their fine form with a 27 10 win over Papua New Guinea which secures them safe passage to the Quarter Finals. Wales will play England tomorrow in the last game of the group stage which will determine the top spot in the group.
