WELSH CROWN GREEN BOWLING ASSOCIATION- Welsh Qualifier for the British Centenary Mixed Pairs Comp. 2022
The Mixed Pairs qualifier and Welsh final day was held at Craig-y-Don BC on Sunday 28th August 2022. Referees on the day were, DT Evans, Alan Davies, Arthur Peake and Richard Haywood. Entry was substantially higher this year with 17 mixed pairs contending on the day. The early rounds got underway with Nicola Boulton and partner Tom Loundes taking an excellent win 21-11 for their first game. Write up from Stephen Rees: Another good day for our bowlers at Cardiff. Our learning disability bowlers had two pairs qualify from last weeks heats and progressed to the quarter-finals of the Welsh Learning Disability Outdoor Pairs competition today. Both managed to get through their Quarter-Final games this morning, and played their Semi-Finals this afternoon. Naomi Baelz and Millie Campbell won their Semi-final by a big margin. Work on the independent review of Bowls in Wales is now well underway. We have recently completed a survey of the Bowls community –thanks to the 600 of you who responded. We are now working on the next phase of the review -a series of interviews with key people/groups, public meetings and focus groups. The Quarter Finals saw the following results: John Bonatti (Coed Talon) – 21 Geraint Roberts (Prestatyn Highbury) – 9 Elfyn Jones (Caerwys) – 21 Phil Holmes (Prestatyn Highbury) – 11 Kerrie Jones (Gresford Colliery) – 21 Bob Jones (Mold Rec) 15 Brian Hayes (Esclusham) – 21 Kevin Williams (Craig Y Don) – 15. The Semi Finals were dominated by the Jones’ with Elfyn beating John 21/12 and Kerrie beating Brian 21/11. After a two year absence the Crown Green world in Wales was pleased to hold the Junior Merit Final – this year at Abergele Bowling Club on Sunday 29th May. The event was well attended, as you might expect, and Abergele welcomed parents, grand-parents, past Presidents of the WCGBA and BCGBA, officials and sixteen excited players. Entries were much reduced with Covid preventing this event, meaning that many former junior players were now no longer eligible to enter. WORLD BOWLS & IIBC WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS BRISTOL INDOOR BOWLS STADIUM – 25th MAY to 29TH MAY
Following the lifting of Covid19 restrictions World Bowls and the IIBC held the first major indoor championships, sixty four bowlers from twenty nine different countries took part in the event hosted by the Bristol Club. Robert Chisholm, Kerry Packwood, and Amy Williams represented Wales. The competition was made up of a men’s singles, ladies singles and mixed pairs events with the first three days being in groups with a round robin format and the best of two sets with a tie break if required. Wales produced their best ever performance in a Home Nations Disability Bowls event when despite finishing third behind England and Scotland at Solihull the standard of play by most of the Welsh players was of a high standard, a point not overseen by England and Scotland management and players who were both impressed by the improvement of our National team.
