Congratulations to the junior team from Rhondda Indoor Bowls Club who were recently crowned the inaugural champions of the new WIBA Frantic Five competition.

The inaugural Frantic Five competition took place on Sunday 8th April at Radnorshire Indoor Bowls Club.

The competition was organised by the WIBA to encourage young bowlers to play competitively in a team environment, whilst having fun and embracing the spirit of the game.

The new concept is designed to get a group of young players interacting with each other on the green, John Phillips, WIBA Junior Coordinator explained,

‘The competition is for teams of five players under 18 years of age. The make-up of each team is designed to ensure a mix of ages, and a combination of male and female players.

The tournament is made up of singles, pairs, triples, fours and culminates in a game of five aside bowls.’

This year saw teams from Rhondda IBC, Port Talbot IBC, Llanelli IBC, Islwyn IBC and Radnor IBC, and there was also a WIBA Select Team to cater for the indoor stadiums who couldn’t field five juniors.

John was delighted at the way the competition went saying,

‘The standard of bowls on the day was extremely high with quite a competitive edge yet played in the right spirit.

The players and their parents were delighted with the day at Radnor IBC and are looking forward to next year’s tournament.’
