Newport hosts World Bowls Competition

Wales has hosted many great sporting events and the City of Newport will be adding to that emphatic list when the Newport Indoor Bowls Centre plays host to the World Indoor Bowls Council Championships in December 2017. The championship will see seven countries including top players from Wales vying for the titles up for grabs which includes World Junior Men’s and Ladies Singles and Mixed Triples Championships. Jordan Davies, Ffion Jones, Seren Jones, Ross Owen, Daniel Salmon and Amy Williams will all be competing during this 3-day festival of bowls, which promises to deliver some top-class competition and exciting play.

Wales Medal Success at the British Isles Visually Impaired Bowls Championship

Glasgow Indoor Bowls Club hosted the British Isles Visually Impaired Bowls Championship from 6 – 8 October. This event was marked as one of the final selection events ahead of the Commonwealth Games and so performance was crucial. Welsh Team Manager John Wilson said “Although we have a much smaller team than England and Scotland, it is a side full of quality bowlers and potential is high. Team Wales win Gold on Channel Islands

Wales’ Bethan Russ, Chris Klefenz, Emma Gittins and Chris Ashman struck gold at the 11th European Championships. The quartet claimed the mixed fours title over Ireland and Scotland in an impressive fashion dropping just one set during the 6 day competition. Held every two years, this year’s Championships took place at the Les Creux Bowls Club, Jersey with players from 16 Nations from across Europe competing. On a cold September evening, in a quiet corner of Abertillery Park under the shadow of the Arael mountain, an event was taking place that encapsulated the theory that bowls really is a game for everyone. Introducing Nia Butler: General Manager of BowlsWales

The newly formed BowlsWales recently appointed Nia Butler as its General Manager. The 44 year old, was born and brought up in Pontypridd, now lives with her family in Cardiff. Since beginning her career at the National Botanic Garden of Wales in the late 1990’s, Nia has enjoyed a number of years working in the sport sector in roles that have included Compliance Manager for the Welsh Rugby Union working primarily with the Premier Division and Community game, and as Director with the sponsorship and funding solutions company Fusion.
