This years Vet’s Merit was held at Argoed Bowling Club on Wednesday 7th June. Always hosted by the Immediate Past President – it was Simon Walker’s day to welcome the players and his guests to the event. Supporting the day were the WCGBA current President Jack Hunt, Deputy President Pauline Lindley and members and officers of the WCGBA. The major competitions of the Crown Green season 2023 got underway with the Welsh Ladies Merit held at Old Colwyn Bowling Club. The weather was ideal and there was a good crowd. Entry this year was well up from 2022 with 18 ladies playing for the trophy. WCGBA President, Jack Hunt hosted the day by getting each game underway. WCGBA- WELSH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2022.
The Welsh Club Championship 2022 was played on Sunday 18th September at Brymbo Bowling Club. Referees on the day were Peter Hughes, Arthur Peake and Tom Lockyer. There were four teams in contention for the title – one from each area of North Wales and each the winner of their respective Area Cup. They were; Flintshire Area – represented by Mold Rec. BC, Glyndwr represented by Colwyn Bay British Legion, Gwynedd by Beaumaris BC and Wrexham by Cunliffe BC. The Mixed Pairs qualifier and Welsh final day was held at Craig-y-Don BC on Sunday 28th August 2022. Referees on the day were, DT Evans, Alan Davies, Arthur Peake and Richard Haywood. Entry was substantially higher this year with 17 mixed pairs contending on the day. The early rounds got underway with Nicola Boulton and partner Tom Loundes taking an excellent win 21-11 for their first game. The BCGBA Junior Individual Merit was held on Saturday 20th August 2022 at Ashton Cricket Club, Greater Manchester. Wales may be only one part of the Crown Green world in Britain, but we punch well above our weight when it comes to talent. Our two representatives Ryan P Williams – Llanfair PG BC. ( 2022 Welsh Junior Merit Champion ) and Finley Hormbrey – Fron Park BC and 2022 Runner-up faced a field of other talented youngsters from across the world of Crown Green bowls. WELSH CROWN GREEN JUNIOR TEAM TAKE BRONZE. In the Drakes Pride Junior County Championship 2022, Wales were frustrated in their attempt to get second place. A very strong Yorkshire team won the championship as was expected, but it was the contest between Wales and Shropshire for silver that dominated everyone’s thoughts.
